"Harry the Piano with saxophonist Simon Bates, bassist Dominic Howls and Pete Cater on drums aimed to recreate the great Dave Brubeck Quartet from the fifties and sixties with their show Pure Brubeck. The technical expertise, musicality and sheer joy exuded made this band enticing to listen to and a joy to watch.
The bespectacled, dark suited foursome in Brubeck style opened the first half with pieces from his famous ‘Time Out’ album which included Camptown Races, It's a Raggy Waltz and the addictive rhythm of Blue Rondo a la Turk, interspersed with highly amusing and informative anecdotal material. An invigorating start which left the audience abuzz with superlative comments in the interval.
Then followed more treats in The Way You Look Tonight, Kern's wonderful melody as interpreted by Brubeck, the hauntingly beautiful Bluette, Unsquare Dance with audience participation and the lovely piano solo at the start of Strange Meadow Lark. No Brubeck evening would be complete without the era-defining hit tuneTake Five and this, with its virtuosic central drum solo, made a superb ending to the official programme.
A wonderful evening, brilliantly played throughout, a trip down memory lane for many showing that Brubeck's legacy is timeless and in good hands."
